Chapter 4:- Types of beds and mattresses

Beds:- 

         A bed is a  piece of furniture or location primarily used as a place to rest, relax and sleep. To make beds more comfortable, the top layer is frequently a mattress. 


  • Construction of bed:- 

Most bed consists of the following parts:-
1.) A frame on which the spring or mattresse rest.
2.) A base which may be made up of open coiled springs,wire mesh or laminated wood strips to provide resilience and support. 
3.) A mattress which lies on the top of the springs and provides extra padding. 
4.) Headboard made of painted or varnished wood or an upholstered type.
5.) Footboard made of wood or metal and lower in height than the headboard. 

  •  Types  of beds:-

1.)Murphy bed (Wallbed) :- A bed that can hinge into a wall or cabinet to save space. It is also called "Sico bed".

2.)Sofa bed :- A bed that is stored inside a sofa. 

3.)Roll-away bed (Cot) :- A bed whose frame folds in half and rolls in order to be more easily stored and move. It is also called "Zed bed".

4.)Daybed / Sofa cum bed :- A daybed is a couch that is used as a seat by day and as a bed by night. 

5.)Water bed :- A bed / mattress combination where the mattress is filled with water. 

6.)Platform bed :- A platform bed is a mattress resting on a solid , flat raised surface, either free-standing or part of the structure of the room. 

7.)Guest Room bed :- it includes single bed,double bed,etc.

8.)Crib :- it is available on guest request and used for babies. 

9.)Bedboard :- these are not extra beds,but they may help in enlarging a smaller bed if necessary. 
  • Selection of beds:-

  1. In hotels most recommended beds are those with the box springs or metal coil springs. 
  2. With box springs ,it is best to use interior - spring mattresses to being the bed to a standard height. 
  3. With metal coil springs ,any kind of mattress may be used. 

  • Care and cleaning of the beds:-

  1. Dust and brush the open springs periodically and wipe with an oily rags. 
  2. The dust ruffles should be laundered as and when required. 
  3. Check for loose headboards and footboards regularly. 
  4. Remove the dust from the base of the bed using a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment.
  5. Remove any stain ,dust or dirt mark from the headboard, footboard, base, and legs of the bedas well. Periodically polish the wood or metal areas. 

Mattresses :- 

       This may be medium, firm, extra firm or super firm. An ideal mattress should give support and at the same time should relax the body. 


  • Types of mattresses :-

1.) Interior spring mattress :- This mattress have an inner layer of springs between layers of insulation and padding. 
It is of 3 types:-
        a.) Open spring mattress :- These have hourglass-shaped wirecoils sandwiched between wire frames.
        b.) Pocketed spring :- In this springs are cylindrical ,and each is enclosed in a fabric or foam pocket.
         c.) Continuous spring mattress :- In this spring are made from wire. That are linked and intertwined in a mesh like patterns. These kind of mattress are ideal for double beds because they compress to the shape of the body. 

2.) Latex or foam rubber :- these mattress are made from synthetic rubber that is whipped into foam with a chemical setting agent while in a semiliquid state and poured into heated moulds. In the moulds the foams get shaped,set, and vulcanized with out losing any of its tiny air cells. A good foam mattress may be about 10cm deep and have layers of foam, with the firmest layer at bottom and softest at the top. 

3.) Solid stuffed mattresses :- these are made by filling a ticking with padding. The padding may be in the form of animal hair, kapok, cotton, wool, coir or flock. These types of mattresses are prone to attack by moths and other pests. 

4.) Plastic mattress :- these are made from polyethylene and vinyl foam. They are non absorbent and resistant to attack by pest. 

5.) Water mattress :- these resemble interior sprung mattress in appearance. Well designed once have water filled cell in the center of the mattress.

  5. Support.                        14. Insulated.                                                       padding

  • Care and cleaning of mattresses :-

  1. Alternately rotating and flipping the mattress on a periodic basis can help minimize body impressions. 
  2. Turning mattresses regularly may increase their life span by 50 %.
  3. Foam mattresses do not need turning : however the single layer may be once turned.
