Chapter 2:- Area Cleaning
(A.) Guest Room Cleaning :-
i) Cleaning of occupied room:-
iii) Cleaning of vacant room:-
iv) Cleaning of VIP room :-
v) Dealing with under repair room:-
(B) Front of the house areas:-
i) Entrance :-
Guest get their 1st impression of hotel from the entrance lobby. Entrance which are not cleaned and maintained daily, it will become unpleasant for the guest due to heavy traffic and exposure. The maintenance and cleaning of the entrance and the door is important. So proper and daily cleaning is required in this areas. Normally cleaning is done at night.

(C.) Back of the house areas :-
i) Cleaning of occupied room:-
- Knock the door and announce housekeeping. In case of DND, proceed to another room.
- If guest allow you to enter, open the door and ask if you may clean the room. If guest is willing start cleaning the room.
- In case ,guest does not want room cleaning ask for alternative time.
- In case their is no answer from guest, knock again and announce housekeeping. If there is still no answer use your keys to open the door. If guest is in washroom or sleeping return back and close the door.
- Open entering the room,open door & place room attendant trolley infront of room.
- Draw curtains & open windows.
- Check maintenance.
- Remove soiled linen, remove bag.
- Bed making.
- Washroom cleaning.
- Dusting, vaccum cleaning.
- Supplies placement.
- Mopping.
- Knock the door and announce housekeeping.
- In case of no answer, knock again & announce housekeeping. Then you use your keys to open the door and if their is no guest is departed, start cleaning.
- Open curtains & windows.
- Check maintenance.
- Check lost and found items of guest & hotels.
- Remove soiled linen, remove bag.
- Bed making.
- Washroom cleaning.
- Proper dusting -drawer cleaning, wardrobe cleaning, etc.
- Vaccum cleaning & mopping.
- Supplies placement.
iii) Cleaning of vacant room:-
- Check maintenance.
- WC need to be flushed.
- Light dusting.
iv) Cleaning of VIP room :-
- VIP rooms are given priority.
- All the points of occupied room of cleaning is done.
v) Dealing with under repair room:-
- Inform front office, with reason.
- Remove guest supplies.
- Cover bed and other furniture with dust sheet.
- Disconnect telephone because no one misuse the telephone.
- Remove carpet for shampooing.
(B) Front of the house areas:-
i) Entrance :-

ii) Lobbies:-
- Public area cleaning of waste paper bins and ashtrays.
- Flower arrangement should be done daily as a part of public area cleaning.
- Glass surface and windows to be cleaned daily.
- Doors and door knobs to be dusters and cleaned daily.
- Any stain on the carpets and upholstery should be cleaned immediately.
- Hard floor should be mopped regularly.
iii) Elevators:-
Elevators must be cleaned at the time of day when it is least used. The necessary boards indicating the cleaning is carried out must be displayed promptly. Elevators doors are made of steel. In steel door shows lots of grease marks from finger easily. Elevators should be closed daily and more through cleaning may be done on periodic basis.
iv) Staircase :-
Staircase should be cleaned when there is less traffic. While cleaning of staircase care should be taken that dart and dust do not fall downwards.
- Carpet should be suction-cleaned daily and any stain should be attended to immediately.
- Damp-dust the wall skirtings weekly.
- Damp-dust the banisters and handrails daily.
- Hard-floored staircase should be suction-cleaned and then damp-mopped.
- While cleaning the floor,the vertical risers of each step should be attended to immediately.
- The carpet should be vaccum-cleaned daily.
- The wall skirtings or baseboards all along the corridor should be cleaned.
- Any finger mark or smudge on the walls should be spot-cleaned.
- Sprinklers installed as part of a fire-fighting system should be checked and cleaned.
- Lights and lightning fixtures should be checked and damp-dusted.
- Air-conditioning vents should be cleaned weekly.
- The exit and entrance doors on the corridor should be damp-dusted on both sides and tracks cleaned.
i) Public restroom :-
- Public restroom must be constantly checked ,cleaned and stocked with high quality sanitary papers and supply.
- Restrooms must be wiped, cleaned and polished.
- Toilets should be brush inside with an effective toilet bowl cleaner.
ii) Kitchen area :-
- While doing the cleaning of kitchen use the floor scrubber carefully so that splashing of water could be minimized.
- Use vacuum cleaner for collecting soil particle from floor.
- Use less water as possible because too much water cause excess splashing. Use slow speed machine and correct amount of cleaning agents.
iii) Wash-up area :-
- Scrape dishes to remove leftover food - use a rubber spatula or paper towel.
- Fill sink or dishpan with clean, hot water.
- Wash "in order," starting with lightly soiled items.
- Rinse suds and residue with clean hot water.
- Dry.
(D.) Work routine and associated problems e.g.high traffic areas, facade cleaning, etc :-
(i) It is difficult to take public area out of service.
(ii) Most of the cleaning task are scheduled for night.
(iii) Public area cleaning evolve used of ladders.
(iv) Some hotels may have complicated design features which are difficult to clean.
(v) Glass,doors are difficult to clean because of steak marks.
(vi) Lobbies have high ceiling which are difficult to clean.
(vii) Chandeliers are difficult to clean.
(viii) Elevators are taken out of service one by one for cleaning.
(ix) Back to back cleaning of banquet hall is a challenge.
(x) If swimming pool is not clean properly, it may cause infections.
